Five Raimondi cranes for the construction of one of Europe’s largest healthcare facilities

Four Raimondi MRT234s and one MRT189 flattop tower cranes have been deployed in Pisa, Italy, for the construction of a new healthcare facility. The New Santa Chiara Hospital Center is one of Europe’s largest, with the jobsite requiring the cranes onsite for approximately 36 months.

“We are extremely proud to support NSCH with the sale of these five Raimondi tower cranes as we are contributing to strengthen the country’s national healthcare network. The decision to deploy these machines was mainly based on good lifting capacity: 12t for the MRT234s and 10t for the MRT189,” said Cristian Badin, Commercial Director, Raimondi Cranes.

The MRT234s, presenting jib lengths of 70m and tip loads of 2.25t, are erected at heights ranging between 34.5m and 64.1m, while the MRT189 with its 65m jib and a tip load of 2.20t, has a height under the hook (HUH) of 49.2m. “The large tip load of these two models was an added value for this project as it boosts productivity and increase ROI in a shorter period of time,” Badin explained.

In addition to the cranes’ advantageous tip loads and ease of installation, the MRT189 boasts an increased rope capacity and a newly-designed gearbox that is boosting crane durability. The MRT234 is ideal for medium to large jobsites that are crowded, due to its flexibility in terms of jib and tower configurations as well as its improved control system.

“When we were planning the crane installation, we considered two key factors. Easy installation was of primary importance as it would require occupying the main road leading to the existing hospital, so naturally smooth, fast, and safe erection procedures were a key priority. Secondly, a detailed study of each crane position was required to avoid overfly of properties and other machines,” Badin remarked, noting that the machines were installed by the Raimondi Cranes operations department over several months, with the final install completed in March 2022.

The new Santa Chiara Hospital Center will be one of the more modern healthcare facilities in Europe accommodating up to 661 beds, an educational center dedicated to the university of medicine, and areas dedicated to medical research.
